Deities to Tie Rakhis During Ritualistic Gamha Purnima Celebration at Shree Jagannath Temple

Puri: The birthday of Lord Balabhadra is to be celebrated at the Shree Jagannath temple of Puri on Monday to mark the day of Gamha Purnima or Raksha Bandhan.

As per the ritualistic tradition of the temple, Devi Subhadra is to tie rakhis to her brothers, Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra, on this day.

For this ceremony, the Patara Bisoyi servitors of the temple prepare the ‘Pata Rakhis’ that are to be tied by Devi Subhadra to her brothers. These special rackis are prepared after the the Chitalagi Amavasya rituals in the temple.

The temple administration provides the ‘Basunga Pata’ cloth, which is dyed in vibrant red, green, purple, and yellow organic colours.

These special rachis have coloured layers. The yellow and red Rakhi designated is for Lord Jagannath, while the purple-blue combination is for Lord Balabhadra.
