Heavy Rain Triggers Red Alert for Delhi-NCR, Waterlogging Chaos Ensues

New Delhi: A red alert was issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) as torrential rain pounded Delhi-NCR on Wednesday evening, leading to severe waterlogging and traffic disruptions in the national capital.

The downpour comes just days after a tragic incident claimed the lives of three civil service aspirants due to basement flooding.

The IMD forecast predicts continued moderate to heavy rain for the next few hours in Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, and Ghaziabad. Wind speeds are expected to reach 30-50 km/h. The red alert remains in place until 9 pm.

North, Central, New, South, Southeast, and East Delhi, along with NCR, are likely to experience moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in the next two hours, according to the IMD.

The heavy downpour resulted in widespread waterlogging across Delhi-NCR. Visuals shared on social media depict the severity of the situation, particularly in areas like Rajendra Nagar – the site of the recent tragedy. Other affected regions include RK Puram, Janpath, Parliament Street, Karol Bagh, Nauroji Nagar, Pant Marg, Mayur Vihar, Noida’s Gaur City and Film City, and Gurugram’s Subhash Nagar and Old Railway Road.

The IMD has extended the rain forecast until August 5.
