Dutee Chand Discloses She Was Diagnosed With Cancer

Bhubaneswar: India’s ace female sprinter Dutee Chand, revealed that in November 2021 she was diagnosed with stage 1 cancer.

According to her, this diagnosis was made following her dismal performance in the women’s 100-meter and 200-meter preliminary rounds at the Tokyo Olympics.

Dr Sudeep Satpathy, a sports medicine specialist from the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Bhubaneswar, diagnosed this early stage of cancer in Dutee’s body.

After getting the MRI results, Dutee was scared and unsure about what this meant for her future.

Dutee cited a groin injury she sustained earlier in 2021 while competing in the National Inter-State Championships leading up to the Olympics as the origin of her health issues.

Dutee feels that the cancer that was mostly impacting her groin area might have developed as a result of hormonal abnormalities associated with testosterone.

Dutee told ANI that she then consulted a physiotherapist, who prescribed her medicines.  After taking medicines, the pain subsided, and there was recovery. Then, she gave sample to NADA on November 28, 2022, and she failed the dope test.

Dutee Chand is set to contest the four-year ban imposed by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). The ban was levied due to her failing two out-of-competition doping tests for a prohibited substance listed in WADA’s 2023 prohibited substances list.
