ECI Issues Notice to K Chandrasekhar Rao Over Derogatory Remarks

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India has issued a notice to former Telangana Chief Minister and BRS leader K Chandrasekhar Rao, seeking an explanation by April 18 for his recent remarks against the Congress government in the state.

During a press conference on April 5 in Sircilla, Rao criticized the government’s handling of water supply during drought-like conditions, using derogatory language to describe ministers. The ECI’s action follows a complaint from the Congress, alleging vulgar and objectionable remarks.

The ECI reminded Rao of previous warnings in 2019 and 2023 for similar instances. In its letter, the commission emphasized the importance of adhering to the Model Code of Conduct, urging all parties to refrain from false statements aimed at misleading voters. The ECI expressed concern that Rao’s unsubstantiated claims could tarnish the image of opposing parties and disrupt the election process.

Rao’s use of crude language in speeches, appealing to rural voters, is well-known. Telangana’s current Chief Minister, A Revanth Reddy, defended Rao’s remarks as justified retaliation against perceived disrespect.
