The setback for Bashir occurred ahead of the 1st Test in Hyderabad, where visa issues compelled him to return to England. Despite initiating the visa application process on December 11th, 2023, Bashir faced delays while the rest of the touring party received approvals. This unfortunate circumstance drew expressions of disappointment from England captain Ben Stokes, who emphasized the frustration of selecting a player unable to join the team due to visa complications.
The ECB initially aimed to resolve the matter during a pre-series camp in Abu Dhabi, but Bashir had to return to the UK for additional paperwork. Stokes voiced his frustration, stating, “Especially as captain, I find it particularly frustrating. I feel for him.”
India captain Rohit Sharma expressed sympathy for Bashir and hoped for a quick resolution to the situation. The incident drew criticism from England fans, with some directing their discontent towards the BCCI.
Rohit Sharma, in a pre-match press conference, said, “I feel for Shoaib Bashir. Unfortunately, I don’t sit in the Visa office to give you more details, but I hope he gets it quickly and enjoys our country.”
With the visa issue now resolved, Bashir is expected to join the team in time for the second match in Vizag, starting on February 2.
