India Summons Maldives Envoy Over Derogatory Remarks Against PM Modi

New Delhi: India summoned the Maldives ambassador following derogatory remarks made by three Maldivian ministers against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

These three Maldivian lawmakers criticised PM Modi following his Lakshadweep trip. Their statements faced massive outrage within the Maldives as several prominent leaders slammed the remarks against the nation’s “closest neighbour”.

The Maldivian government suspended three ministers after several Indians on social media claimed to have cancelled their Maldives visits as a mark of protest. Ministers Maryam Shiuna, Malsha Shareef and Mahzoom Majid were suspended from their ministerial posts.

Former Maldives president Mohamed Nasheed described the remarks as “appalling” and asked President Mohamed Muizzu’s government to distance itself from these comments.
