Indian High Commissioner Meets Maldives Govt After New Delhi Summons Maldivian Envoy

Munu Mahawar, the Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives met Maldivian Foreign Ministry officials on Monday in a pre-arranged meeting. This meeting followed the Indian External Affairs Ministry’s summon to the Maldivian envoy Ibrahim Shaheeb to its South Block venue in New Delhi.

These happenings follow the ongoing controversy over derogatory remarks by some Maldives ministers against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, following his recent Lakshadweep visit.

Several Maldivian ministers posted offensive remarks against PM Modi, after his ‘Visit Lakshadweep’ push for promoting tourism.

The meeting of the envoys follows the suspension of three  ministers of Maldives, Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna and Abdulla Mahzoom Majid, for their anti-Indian PM posts.

Several Maldivian politicians, including former Presidents Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Mohamed Nasheed, have condemned the ministers’ remarks.
