Kolkata Doctor Rape and Murder: Bluetooth Headphones Lead to Accused’s Arrest

Kolkata: A man has been arrested for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The postgraduate medical student was found dead in the seminar hall of the government hospital.

The accused, identified as Sanjoy Roy reportedly worked as a civic volunteer, has been apprehended.

Despite repeated questions at a press conference, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal did not confirm the accused’s profession. Goyal stated, “Regardless of his occupation, he is a criminal for committing such a heinous act and deserves the highest punishment. Evidence against him has been secured.”

The police confirmed that the post-mortem report indicated sexual assault. Roy’s Bluetooth headphone, found at the crime scene, was crucial in his identification and arrest. CCTV footage also placed him at the location around the time of the incident.

A seven-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by the Deputy Commissioner of the Detective Department and supervised by an Additional Commissioner of Police, has been formed. Forensic evidence has been collected, and the autopsy was recorded with family members present.

The shocking incident has raised safety concerns among students, prompting protests by BJP activists at the hospital. However, students have rejected political interference on campus.

The case has ignited a political debate, with BJP and CPM demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe.

State BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar expressed doubts about the adequacy of the police investigation, while Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee suggested a seven-day trial for such crimes and advocated for severe punishment.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the incident as “unfortunate and despicable,” promising fast-track court proceedings and strict punishment for the accused. She assured that the administration has no objection to a central agency probe.
