Manipur Violence has Claimed 226 Lives, Over 59,000 Homeless: CM Biren Singh

Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren on Wednesday told the Manipur Legislative Assembly that 226 people have been reported dead and 39 are missing due to the ongoing unrest in the state since May 2023.

He also informed that 59, 414 are in relief camps due to the ongoing violence in the state.

Around 11,133 houses have been burnt down and 11,892 cases have been registered in different police stations in connection with the violence, the CM said.

In response to the crisis, the state government has established 302 relief camps to shelter the displaced population, he added.

Manipur is experiencing ethnic violence since May 3, 2023 after a tribal solidarity march in the hill districts to protest against the majority Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.

Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while tribals, which include Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 per cent and reside mainly in the hill districts.
