‘Assured Safety of Hindus, Minorities’: PM Modi Receives Call from Bangladesh’s Muhammad Yunus

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a call on Friday from Muhammad Yunus, the interim chief adviser of Bangladesh, who assured him of the safety and security of Hindus and other minorities in the country. PM Modi shared this update on X, where he mentioned that they discussed the current situation in Bangladesh.

PM Modi wrote, “Received a telephone call from Professor Muhammad Yunus, @ChiefAdviserGoB. Exchanged views on the prevailing situation. Reiterated India’s support for a democratic, stable, peaceful and progressive Bangladesh. He assured protection, safety and security of Hindus and all minorities in Bangladesh.”

During his Independence Day speech on Thursday, PM Modi expressed concern over the safety of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh, noting that 140 crore Indians are worried amid the ongoing unrest in the neighbouring country.

His remarks come after several violent incidents targeting minorities following the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The unrest in Bangladesh began in June, initially as protests over government job quotas, which later escalated into anti-government demonstrations. Since Sheikh Hasina’s departure and her escape to India, there have been numerous attacks on minorities, particularly Hindus. Mobs have vandalised properties, looted businesses and committed lynchings.

Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, now leading the interim government, has stressed the importance of protecting minorities, stating that they are equal citizens of Bangladesh.
