PM Modi to Visit Poland on August 21, Ukraine on August 23

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Poland on August 21, followed by a significant visit to Ukraine on August 23, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Secretary West of the MEA, Tanmaya Lal, announced the visit during a press briefing, stating that the invitations were extended by Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The visit to Ukraine marks a historic moment, as it will be the first time in over 30 years that an Indian Prime Minister will set foot in the country. PM Modi’s visit gains additional significance as India maintains its neutral stance on the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, advocating for diplomacy and dialogue to achieve lasting peace.

“India’s position has been clear and consistent—diplomacy and dialogue are crucial to resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Lasting peace can only be achieved through a negotiated settlement acceptable to both parties,” Lal said.

India’s stance has attracted criticism from Western countries, particularly the United States, which has expressed concerns over India’s close ties with Russia. Despite these pressures, India continues to balance its relationships with the West and its longstanding ally, Russia.

PM Modi’s visit to Poland will be the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 45 years, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. Poland, home to around 25,000 Indians, played a critical role in assisting India during the evacuation of 4,000 Indian students from Ukraine at the onset of Russia’s invasion in 2022. Lal also highlighted the historical bond between the two countries, referencing Poland’s refuge in India during World War II.
