Poacher Shot Dead in Assam After He Attacks Police with Machete

Guwahati: A poacher was gunned down by cops when he attacked them with a machete in Assam’s Chirang district on Sunday.

The slain man identified as Noweswar Basumatary was among three poachers arrested from the Manas National Park on the India-Bhutan border during a joint operation by the Forest Department and the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB).

While the search was on to locate the guns of the poachers, Noweswar attacked the cops with a machete. He was killed by the firing by the officials in self-defence.

These poachers were alleged to be involved in the killing of rhinos. In April this year, a group of seven rhino poachers set up camp in Manas National Park. They stayed in the park for six days, killing a rhino and selling its horn. Five out of the seven poachers have been arrested, the police said.
