Rajya Sabha Passes 3 Criminal Code Bills Amidst Opposition Suspension

New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha on Thursday passed three crucial criminal bills, namely the Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Sakshya (Second) Bill.

This legislative milestone occurred amidst a backdrop where 46 Opposition MPs remained suspended from the Upper House due to protests related to a breach in Parliament security.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita is slated to replace the aging Indian Penal Code-1860, while the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita aims to supplant the CrPC of 1973.

Additionally, the Bharatiya Sakshya Bill is set to replace the Indian Evidence Act of 1872.

This overhaul signifies a strategic move towards modernizing and streamlining the legal framework governing criminal justice in the country.
