Uttarakhand CM Dhami Tables Uniform Civil Code Bill in Assembly

Dehradun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami presented the Uniform Civil Code bill in the state Assembly on Tuesday.

This bill proposes uniform marriage, divorce, land, property and inheritance laws for all citizens irrespective of their religion in Uttarakhand.

Ahead of tabling the UCC bill, Dhami reached the Assembly with an original copy of the Constitution in hand. When he entered the house, the BJP MLAs shouted slogans of “Jai Sri Ram” and “Vande Mataram”.

The bill will now be discussed on the floor of the house before being passed to become an Act.

Once passed, Uttarakhand will become the first state in the country after independence to adopt the UCC. Interestingly the UCC has been active in Goa since the era of Portuguese rule.

The opposition MLAs held a demonstration in front of the Uttarakhand Assembly alleging that they were not given time to study the provisions in the UCC bill.

A special session of the Uttarakhand Assembly has been convened for the passage of the UCC bill.

After Uttarakhand, other BJP-ruled states like Gujarat and Assam are planning to enact UCC laws following the Uttarakhand UCC as a model.
