“Can’t Say …”: Vinesh Phogat Hints at Possible U-Turn on Retirement After Emotional Homecoming

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat, after facing an ‘unjust’ disqualification at the Paris Olympics, has pledged to continue her battle against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), expressing hope that “truth will prevail.”

Her arrival in India was met with an overwhelming reception at IGI airport, where hundreds of supporters celebrated her return despite her Olympic setback.

Phogat, disqualified for being overweight after reaching the 50kg final, saw her appeal rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Her journey from Delhi to her native village in Balali took 13 hours, with numerous villages honouring her along the way. She arrived in Balali around midnight to a rousing welcome from villagers, friends, and family.

In a heartfelt address, Vinesh stated, “Our fight has not ended and will continue. I pray to God that truth will prevail.” She reflected on the emotional impact of the warm reception, which she believes will bolster her resolve as she contemplates her future in wrestling.

Phogat, who previously led protests at Jantar Mantar against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, remains committed to fighting for women’s rights in wrestling. Singh faces legal proceedings in Delhi over sexual harassment allegations.

Vinesh, who had announced her retirement after her Olympic disqualification, shared her personal struggles and achievements in a social media post. However, her omission of her uncle Mahavir Phogat, who introduced her to wrestling, drew criticism from her cousins Geeta and Babita Phogat. They expressed their discontent on social media, highlighting the oversight.

Vinesh, a two-time CWG gold medallist and Asian Games champion, expressed her hope that someone from her village surpasses her wrestling achievements, stating, “If I can promote women wrestlers from my village, it would be my greatest accomplishment.”
