Paris Olympics: Vinesh Phogat Becomes First Indian Woman to Reach Olympic Wrestling Final

Paris: Vinesh Phogat etched her name in history as the first Indian woman to reach the Olympic wrestling finals. In a gripping semi-final match, Phogat overcame Cuba’s Lopez Guzman, essentially confirming a wrestling medal for India.

Phogat’s aggressive strategy from the start overwhelmed Guzman. Despite a scoreless first two minutes, Guzman received a penalty for passivity. Phogat capitalised, maintaining pressure throughout the bout.

Phogat adjusted her tactics when Guzman counterattacked. A warning for passivity spurred Phogat to execute a decisive move, securing a 5-0 lead by targeting Guzman’s right leg. Phogat’s composed performance sealed her victory.

Earlier in the day, Phogat achieved a stunning upset by defeating reigning champion Yui Susaki of Japan, a top seed, with a 3-2 score in the Round of 16. Susaki, who had not conceded a point during her Tokyo Olympics campaign, faced her fourth career defeat and first international loss to Phogat.

Phogat will now compete against USA’s Ann Sarah Hildebrandt in the final.
