Winter Session Of Parliament To Commence On December 4, To Have 15 Sittings Over 19 Days

New Delhi: The winter session of Parliament is set to kick off on December 4 and extend until December 22, as announced by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi on Thursday.

The session, featuring 15 sittings over 19 days, will delve into discussions on legislative matters and various topics, with a keen eye on addressing the “cash-for-query” allegations against TMC MP Mahua Moitra.

During this session, the Lok Sabha will witness the tabling of the Ethics Committee’s report on the aforementioned allegations, necessitating the House’s adoption of the report before any recommended expulsion takes effect. Additionally, the spotlight will be on three crucial bills aiming to replace the IPC, CrPC, and the Evidence Act, with the standing committee on Home having recently endorsed the three reports.

Another significant bill awaiting attention concerns the appointment of the chief election commissioner and election commissioners. Initially introduced in the Monsoon session, the government refrained from pushing for its passage in the special session due to opposition protests and concerns raised by former chief election commissioners. The government’s objective is to align the status of the CEC and ECs with that of the cabinet secretary, currently enjoying the same standing as a Supreme Court judge.
