Sensex, Nifty Open 2024 with Modest Gains

Mumbai: Equity indices Sensex and Nifty commenced 2024 with a subdued start, concluding the day with marginal gains. The 30-share Sensex recorded a modest uptick of 0.04%, settling at 72,271.94. Throughout the volatile session, it reached an intraday high of 72,561.91 and a low of 72,031.23, marking a lifetime peak.

The Nifty saw a marginal rise of 0.05%, closing at 21,741.90. In 2023, the BSE benchmark surged by 18.73%, gaining 11,399.52 points, while the Nifty climbed 20%, adding 3,626.1 points.

On the Sensex, winners included Nestle, Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies, Tata Motors, Wipro, and ITC. Conversely, Bharti Airtel, Mahindra & Mahindra, Bajaj Finserv, HDFC Bank, NTPC, and Hindustan Unilever lagged.

Global markets were closed for New Year’s Day, with US markets ending slightly lower on Friday. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, declined by 0.14% to USD 77.04 per barrel.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) displayed positive sentiment on Friday, purchasing equities worth Rs 1,459.12 crore, as per exchange data. In the final trading day of 2023, the BSE benchmark fell by 0.23%, shedding 170.12 points to settle at 72,240.26. The Nifty declined by 0.22%, losing 47.30 points to settle at 21,731.40.
