Man Steals Rs 15 Cr Artefacts from Bhopal Museum, Fails to Escape

Bhopal: A person was arrested in Bhopal for attempting to steal artefacts worth around Rs 15 crore from Madhya Pradesh’s State Museum in Bhopal.

The accused, identified as Vinod Yadav, entered the Bhopal museum on September 1 and hid behind a staircase when the museum was shut down in the evening.

At night, he stole more than 200 vintage gold and silver coins, dating from the Gupta age to the Mughal period as well as several other artefacts.

But he could not escape out as he failed to climb the 25-foot high boundary wall of the museum. He was injured while attempting to scale the wall.

On September 2, museum officials called up the police, when they found broken locks and missing coins and artefacts.

During the search, police found the accused lying injured near the museum’s wall. He was arrested and a bag was recovered from him which contained 98 gold and metal coins dating from the Gupta age to the Mughal period, 75 silver coins of various sizes, 38 copper coins, one gold medal, and 12 mixed-metal medals having an approximate market value of Rs 15 crore.

It was found that the security alarm and CCTV cameras were not working at the museum, and the entry doors were weak and could be opened with a strong push.
