UGC Urges Universities To Use Only Handloom Robes For Convocations, Share Photos & Videos

New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has reiterated its recommendation for universities to opt for ceremonial robes made from handloom fabrics during special events such as convocations. Officials report that the UGC had previously communicated this suggestion to universities in 2015 and 2019.

Citing the comfort of handloom fabrics in India’s climate and the boost to national pride, the UGC emphasizes the positive impact of this shift. While many universities have already adopted handloom fabrics for ceremonial attire, some have not updated their dress codes for convocations, according to UGC Secretary Manish R Joshi.

In a letter, Joshi urges universities to consider the switch, highlighting that the use of handloom fabrics not only fosters a sense of Indian pride but also supports the country’s handloom industry, offering employment opportunities in rural areas. Universities are requested to share their actions on this matter, including photographs and videos.

The UGC’s initiative aims to encourage sustainable choices and promote the rich tradition of handloom weaving in the country.
