Kangana Ranaut Says ‘Script Ready’ For Film On Bilkis Bano Case But Major OTT Platforms Have Said No

Mumbai: In a recent X (formerly Twitter) interaction, Bollywood actor and filmmaker Kangana Ranaut revealed her longstanding desire to make a film on the Bilkis Bano case. The Supreme Court on Monday overturned the Gujarat government’s decision to release the 11 convicts involved in the 2002 Gujarat riots, where Bilkis Bano was raped, and her family was killed.

Kangana expressed her frustration, stating that despite having a researched script ready for three years, major studios and OTT platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, and others declined her project, citing a policy against “politically motivated films.” She mentioned that JioCinema declined collaboration due to her perceived support for BJP, and Zee was undergoing a merger, leaving her with limited options.

Responding to a user’s suggestion to tell Bilkis Bano’s story for women empowerment or humanity, Kangana highlighted the challenges she faces in bringing such narratives to the forefront.

In a separate incident, Kangana Ranaut criticized the audience’s preference for what she termed as ‘women beating films.’ She expressed disappointment over the reception of her film Tejas and stated that the overwhelming negativity and audience preference for movies portraying women in a derogatory manner were discouraging. Kangana hinted at a potential career shift in the future, emphasizing her desire to dedicate her efforts to more meaningful projects aligned with women empowerment.
