Brazil’s Heavy Rain Death Toll Rises to 78, More than 1 Lakh Displaced

Death toll because of heavy rains and storms in Brazil has risen to 78 and 103 are still missing.

According to Brazilian authorities, more than 115,000 people displaced due to severe storms that inundated large parts of south Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul state since April 29.

Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva arrived in Rio Grande do Sul on Sunday with most members of his cabinet to monitor the rescue and reconstruction efforts.

According to the Civil Defense agency, some 780,000 residents have been affected by flooding, with thousands of people forced to flee their homes by boats or climb onto rooftops in hope of being rescued by helicopters.
