At least 19 persons lost their lives when a portion of a highway collapsed in southern China at the early hours on Wednesday. This incident occurred following heavy rain in the area in recent days.
A 17.9-metre-long section of the highway collapsed and 18 cars fell into the newly formed ditch, informed the authorities in Meizhou city in Guangdong province. The incident occurred around 2 AM.

Video and photos in local media showed smoke and fire at the scene, with highway rails slanting downward into the flames.

Around 30 persons were rescued from the spot and were admitted to the hospital, reported Chinaās state broadcaster CCTV.
