19 Dead as Portion of Highway Collapses in China After Heavy Rains

At least 19 persons lost their lives when a portion of a highway collapsed in southern China at the early hours on Wednesday. This incident occurred following heavy rain in the area in recent days.

A 17.9-metre-long section of the highway collapsed and 18 cars fell into the newly formed ditch, informed the authorities in Meizhou city in Guangdong province. The incident occurred around 2 AM.

Video and photos in local media showed smoke and fire at the scene, with highway rails slanting downward into the flames.

May 1: a section of the Meilong Expressway (梅龙高速公路) in Guangdong province collapsed at around 2:10am, and 18 vehicles fell into the sinkhole.

Around 30 persons were rescued from the spot and were admitted to the hospital, reported China’s state broadcaster CCTV.
