Indian Businessman Firoz Merchant Donates ₹2.5 Cr to Free 900 Prisoners in UAE

Dubai: In a heartwarming gesture ahead of Ramzan, Firoz Merchant, a prominent Indian businessman and philanthropist based in Dubai, has donated 1 million dirhams (approximately Rs 2.5 crore) to secure the release of 900 prisoners from jails across the United Arab Emirates (UAE) since the start of 2024.

Merchant, known for his humanitarian initiative ‘The Forgotten Society’, aims to extend this generosity to free a total of 3,000 prisoners by the end of the year. His donation facilitated the release of prisoners from various Emirates, including Ajman, Fujairah, Dubai, Umm Al Quwain, and Ras Al Khaimah. Additionally, Merchant covered their debts and provided airfare for their return home, emphasizing family reunification and offering individuals a fresh start.

Working closely with the Director Generals of Police at Central Jails across the UAE, Merchant’s initiative has benefited over 20,000 prisoners over the years, earning him appreciation from both government officials and beneficiaries.

Expressing gratitude for the collaboration with the government, Merchant reiterated his belief in the universality of humanity and the importance of providing opportunities for individuals to reconcile with their families and communities.

Colonel Mohammed Yusuf Al-Matrooshi, a UAE official, praised Merchant’s dedication to prisoner rehabilitation, emphasizing the tangible hope his actions bring to those facing financial challenges.
