Pakistan Woman Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Burning Quran

A 40-year-old woman was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Pakistani court in Punjab province as she was found guilty of burning pages of Islam’s holy book, Quran.

Asia Bibi, a Muslim woman from the Bedian Road area of Lahore, was arrested by the Pakistan police in 2021 on a complaint by a neighbour alleging that she burnt a copy of the Quran outside her house.

Deciding the case, the Lahore sessions court on Thursday handed down life imprisonment to Asia Bibi on the charges of desecration of the Holy Quran. She was booked under the stringent blasphemy laws of Pakistan.

Asia Bibi will challenge the verdict in the Lahore High Court and expressed hope to get relief from the higher judiciary.
