World Music Day 2023: Know Its History, Significance

New Delhi: World Music Day is an annual global celebration of music that is observed on June 21. The Day is celebrated with the aim of providing free music to all music lovers and creating a platform for both amateur and professional musicians to showcase their talents to the world.

World Music Day History:

World Music Day, also known as Fete de la Musique, started in France in 1982 as a music festival.

The idea was conceived in 1981 by French Minister of Culture Jack Lang. Since then, the day has been celebrated as World Music Day every year.

According to another theory, American musician Joel Cohen proposed an all-night music celebration in 1976 to mark the beginning of summer solstice, resulting in World Music Day on June 21 being celebrated worldwide.

Significance:

World Music Day looks to emphasize the important role played by music in each of our lives. The occasion serves as a platform for amateur and professional musicians to perform in public spaces.

World Music Day also recognizes the power of music in uniting people across borders, cultures, and languages through this universal power of melodies and rhythms.
