Former Orissa HC Chief Justice S. Muralidhar Appears as Senior Advocate Before Supreme Court

New Delhi: Former Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court, S. Muralidhar, assumed the role of a senior advocate at the Supreme Court on Monday to defend a retired judicial officer. The case pertains to adverse remarks made against her by the Madras High Court.

Justice Muralidhar was designated as a senior advocate by a full court of judges on October 16. His transfer from the Delhi High Court to the Punjab and Haryana High Court had attracted attention when he had asked the Delhi police to file FIRs against some BJP leaders for hate speeches preceding the Delhi riots in February 2020.

On Monday, Justice Muralidhar appeared before Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud’s court. In a light-hearted exchange, the CJI remarked, “I can’t say brother Muralidhar, but I will say Mr. Muralidhar now.”

During the proceedings, Justice Muralidhar highlighted the judicial officer’s impeccable record, and the Supreme Court allowed his client to submit a written response to the adverse remarks.

As the session concluded, a lawyer in the court commended Justice Muralidhar, stating, “He is an asset whichever side he appears for.”
