Bihar Caste-Based Survey Reveals OBCs Make Up 63% of Population, Sparks Nationwide Debate & Demands

Patna: A recently released caste-based survey by the Bihar government has revealed that Other Backward Classes (OBCs) constitute a remarkable 63% of the state’s total population, with the Extremely Backward Classes being the largest social segment.

The survey is expected to amplify demands for a nationwide caste-based census, which the Modi government has decided against.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has expressed commitment to using the findings to further develop and uplift all sections of society.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav has hailed the release as a “historic moment.”

Union Minister and BJP leader Giriraj Singh has criticized the survey report, branding it as an “eyewash.”

Here are some key findings from the Bihar caste-based survey:

  • Backward Classes constitute 27.12% of the surveyed population.
  • Extremely Backward Classes make up 36.01% of the population.
  • Scheduled Castes account for 19.65%.
  • Scheduled Tribes represent 1.68%.
  • The general category comprises 15.52% of the surveyed population.

The survey also highlighted that Yadavs, an OBC group to which Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav belongs, constitute the largest chunk at 14.27% of the total population.

These findings are expected to have far-reaching implications on development policies and political discourse in Bihar.
