Jail Officer Who Gave Ram Rahim 6 Paroles Gets BJP Ticket to Contest Haryana Polls

Chandigarh: In the first list of its candidates for the upcoming Assembly polls in Haryana, the BJP has named former prison official Sunil Sangwan as a candidate.

According to NDTV, Sangwan is a former prison official, who facilitated rape convict godman Ram Rahim parole six times. Sangwan will contest the Dadri seat ex-BJP leader Somveer Sangwan won as an independent in 2019, reported NDTV.

Sunil Sangwan recently resigned from his post as a jail official.

In August, Ram Rahim was given a 21-day furlough. It was his 10th parole in the last four years. It is alleged that Ram Rahim’s temporary releases mostly come days before state or local body elections.

Despite being convicted in rape case, the self-proclaimed godman still has a large number of followers in Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh. In January, he was given a 50-day parole weeks before the general election.

He was also released on Parole for three weeks in November, days before the Rajasthan election.

In 2022, he got out of jail thrice – for 21 days in February during the Punjab polls, for a month in June when Haryana civic body elections were being held, and then in October for 40 days during Haryana by-polls.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is serving a 20-year jail sentence for raping two of his disciples. He is lodged in the Sunaria jail in Haryana’s Rohtak district.
