London: Mary Kom, the iconic Indian boxer and the country’s first-ever Olympic medallist in women’s boxing was recently honoured with the prestigious Global Indian Icon of the Year award at the annual UK-India Awards in Windsor, England.
The 40-year-old former Rajya Sabha member graciously accepted the award from Indian High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, during a gala ceremony. Reflecting on her 20-year journey of dedication and hard work in the sport, Mary Kom expressed her gratitude for the recognition and highlighted the sacrifices she has made for her country and family.
Renowned filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, known for his work on the Oscar-nominated film ‘Elizabeth: The Golden Age,’ was also honoured at the event with a Lifetime Achievement Award, acknowledging his significant contributions to cinema in both India and the UK.
The Nehru Centre in London, which serves as the cultural wing of the Indian High Commission, was recognized with the UK-India Award for Significant Contribution to UK-India Relations.
The UK-India Awards, organized by the India Global Forum (IGF) as part of UK-India Week, celebrate the remarkable achievements of leaders in various fields such as business, professional services, government, culture, and social impact. These awards aim to strengthen bilateral ties and promote collaboration between the two nations. Manoj Ladwa, the founder and chairman of IGF, emphasized the power of collaboration and the limitless potential within the partnership between the UK and India.
