MC Mary Kom Steps Down as India’s Chef-de-Mission for Paris Olympics

New Delhi: Six-time world champion boxer M C Mary Kom has decided to step down from her role as India’s Chef-de-Mission for the upcoming Paris Olympics due to personal reasons. The announcement was made by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha, who stated that Mary Kom had formally requested to be relieved from her position in a letter addressed to her.

In her letter, Mary Kom expressed her regret at not being able to fulfill the prestigious responsibility, citing personal reasons for her decision to resign. She emphasized her commitment to serving her country in every way possible but noted that she had “no choice” but to step down. Despite this, she expressed her intention to support and cheer on the Indian athletes competing in the Olympic Games with great expectations.

Mary Kom’s appointment as the logistical in-charge of India’s contingent for the July 26-August 11 Games was announced by the IOA on March 21. However, her resignation has prompted the IOA to seek a replacement for her role. PT Usha expressed sadness at Mary Kom’s decision but reiterated the IOA’s respect for her privacy and decision.

Following a conversation with Mary Kom after receiving her letter, PT Usha stated that she completely understood and respected her request. She assured Mary Kom of her support and urged everyone to respect the boxer’s privacy during this time. Further announcements regarding Mary Kom’s replacement will be made after appropriate consultations.
