MCD Polls: AAP, BJP Leaders Clash Over Oath-Taking Of Nominated Councillors

New Delhi: Newly elected councillors of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and BJP clashed in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) meeting today, causing a major disruption to break out shortly before the election of a mayor.

BJP and AAP supporters raised slogans in the middle of the Civic Center. Members were seen pushing one another, and some were even seen tumbling to the ground.

Protests broke out when interim Speaker Satya Sharma appointed by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena began swearing in the nominated members or aldermen.

The elected council members ought to have taken the oath of office before the nominated members, according to AAP members.

The altercation comes after a string of confrontations between the AAP and the Lieutenant Governor, who represents the Centre and answers to the Union Home Minister.

AAP claims that their administration in Delhi was not consulted on a number of the appointments. The Lieutenant Governor was seeking to sway the Mayor elections in the BJP’s favour, AAP added.

The BJP, which lost the municipal elections after serving three terms in office, has asserted that they will be elected mayor.

Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP has put Shelly Oberoi forward for mayor whereas BJP has fielded Rekha Gupta. Ashu Thakur is the backup candidate for AAP. Aaley Muhammad Iqbal from the AAP, Jalaj Kumar from the BJP, and Kamal Bagri from the party are the candidates for deputy mayor.
