48th Anniversary of Emergency: PM Modi Honours Courageous Opposition

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to those who resisted the Emergency declared by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975. Today marks the 48th anniversary of this significant event in Indian history.

PM Modi took to Twitter to emphasize that the Emergency was a dark period that stood in stark contrast to the values enshrined in the Constitution. He expressed his admiration for the courageous individuals who fought against the Emergency, working tirelessly to uphold democracy and strengthen the nation’s democratic spirit.

The Emergency, which lasted from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977, remains a controversial chapter in India’s post-independence history. It was imposed citing an “internal disturbance” as the justification. During this nearly two-year period, numerous opposition leaders were arrested, dissent was suppressed, civil liberties were curtailed, and press freedom was severely restricted.

Prime Minister Modi’s tribute serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding democratic values and upholding the principles enshrined in the Constitution. The resistance against the Emergency stands as a testament to the unwavering commitment of the Indian people to protect their democratic rights.
