Two people died and 10 others injured due to electrocution during Tazia procession

Gujarat: Two persons died and 10 others were injured after electrocution took place during a procession being taken out in Gujarat’s Jamnagar city on the eve of Muharram. The police gave this information on Tuesday.

An official of the B-division police station said that the incident happened around 11:15 pm on Monday when the procession was passing through Dharanagar locality of the city.

The people of the Muslim community celebrate Muharram in memory of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, in the battle of Karbala. Tazia, a small replica of Imam Hussain’s tomb, was electrocuted after it touched an electric wire, injuring 12 people, the official said.

He told that as soon as he touched the wire of Tazia, a spark was seen coming out from its end. People who came in contact with Tazia got electric shock. All the 12 people were taken to be government hospital, where doctors declared two dead.

The deceased have been identified as Asif Yunus Bhai Malik (23) and Mohammad Waheed (25), the official said. Tazia is usually made from bamboo and decorated with colored lights and paper.
