Delhi Braces for Flood Threat as Yamuna’s Water Level Continues to Surge

New Delhi; Yamuna River’s water level in Delhi continues to rise, reaching 205.45 meters at 7 am on Tuesday. The danger mark is at 205.33 meters. This surge has sparked concerns about potential floods in the national capital and surrounding areas. On Monday, the water level was at 206.56 meters, while it had reached an all-time high of 208.66 meters on July 13.

The increase in Yamuna’s water level is mainly due to the discharge of water from the Hathnikund Barrage caused by heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. The river had been hovering around the danger mark for the last few days, with minor fluctuations.

Authorities had issued announcements on Sunday to vacate low-lying areas near the floodplains. The rising water level led to water-logging and flood-like situations in several places in Delhi.

To address the situation, the Delhi government took preventive measures, including reinforcing vulnerable spots and building embankments at the Wazirabad Water Treatment Plant. Home Minister Amit Shah also discussed the matter with Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena.
