4% Reservation for Muslims Scrapped by Karnataka’s BJP Govt

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government on Friday scrapped the 4 per cent quota for Other Backward Classes (OBC) Muslims and announced two new categories for reservation in jobs and education in the state.  Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai made this announcement before the coming assembly election in this BJP-ruled state. The 4 per cent OBC Muslim quota will now be shared by the Vokkaligas and Lingayats. The OBC Muslims, who were earlier benefitting from this reservation, are now categorised under economically weaker sections.

The decision pushes the reservation percentage in Karnataka to approximately 57 per cent now, which is beyond the 50 per cent cap set by the Supreme Court of reservations.

Bommai said backward classes have been reorganised into two sets – “more backward and most backward classes”.
