Batter Shreyas Iyer may Miss IPL & World Test Championship Final for Back Surgery

New Delhi: Indian batter Shreyas Iyer is likely to undergo surgery for his recurring back injury, reported India Today. Because of it, this middle-order batsman of Team India may miss the IPL and the World Test Championship Final. If the surgery takes place then he may be away from cricketing action for five months.

The batter missed the opening Test match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy and walked into the playing XI for the second Test match in Delhi. Iyer had said at the time that he was fully fit and his back issues were behind him.

He is also the skipper of Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. He is out of action since the final day of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023. According to sources, Shreyas is expected to have his surgery either in London or somewhere in India under the strict guidance of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Because of this surgery he will miss the high-profile tournaments like the World Test Championship Final against Australia, the Indian Premier League, which will begin on March 31.

Iyer’s absence will be felt in the IPL franchise KKR, who bought Iyer for a massive sum of Rs 12.25 crores and made him their captain in 2022. KKR will now have to search for another batter and a captain with less than 10 days remaining for the tournament.
