Congress Got Only 0.9% Votes More than BJP in Himachal

Congress retained power in Himachal Pradesh with 40 seats in the assembly, while BJP had to be satisfied with 25 MLAs. But these figures do not speak out the reality of the support base of both parties in the state. If we take into account the vote percentage, then there is something for Congress to worry about, while BJP has something to be happy about.

As a whole, Congress got 0.9 per cent more votes than the BJP in Himachal. Congress got 43.90 per cent vote share to win 40 seats in the 68-member Assembly in this Himalayan state. Although Congress increased its vote share since last assembly polls yet BJP was close behind with 43 per cent vote share. But BJP could get only 25 seats. BJP’s vote share also went down from 2017.

Some Congress candidates won elections by small margins.

This point was highlighted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president J P Nadda in their address to party workers in Delhi after the declaration of poll results for Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.

Three independents were also victorious in Himachal assembly polls. Independents had 10.39 per cent of the total votes, while 0.59 per cent of votes went to NOTA.

Despite much ado, AAP could get only 1.10 per cent votes. CPI (M)’s sitting MLA from Theog lost his seat while the party could get only 0.66 per cent vote share.

In the 2017 state elections, the BJP had got 48.8 per cent votes while Congress received 41.7 per cent, Independents 6.3 per cent and the CPI(M) had got 1.5 per cent, while NOTA attracted 0.9 per cent votes.
