Indian Hockey Team Loses 1-2 to Host Spain in Its Opening Match

The Indian men’s hockey lost 1-2 against Spain in its opening game of the 100th Anniversary Spanish Hockey Federation international tournament played in Terrassa of Spain.

Captain Harmanpreet Singh (59th minute) netted a goal for India after Pau Cunill (11th) and Joaquin Menini (33rd) had put the hosts in front on Tuesday.

India’s aggressive efforts in the first quarter did not result in any goals. Spain began to gain momentum as the first quarter progressed and Pau Cunill scored a goal to put the hosts ahead.

Spain’s defence held strong to prevent the visitors from bouncing back in the second quarter. Spain was leading 1-0 at half-time.

The third quarter began with the Indian team in attacking mode. But the hosts doubled their lead through Joaquin Menini.

Trailing by two goals, India won a penalty corner but were unable to encash it.

Harmanpreet converted a penalty corner in the dying minutes of the game.

The Indian team will next take on the Netherlands on Wednesday.
