Kerala Journalist Arrested in UP on Terror Charges Gets out of Jail After 2 Yrs

Lucknow: Arrested Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan came out of Lucknow jail after over two years on Thursday. He was arrested in Uttar Pradesh on terror charges.

As per reports, Kappan was arrested while he was in UP to report about rape and subsequent death of a Dalit woman in Hathras. After arresting him, UP police alleged that Kappan and three others were accused of having links with the now-banned Popular Front of India (PFI) and were involved in a conspiracy to instigate violence.

In September, the Supreme Court granted him bail in connection with that case. But he continued to be in Lucknow jail because of a money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate.

Initially, Kappan was accused of sedition and charged under the anti-terror law UAPA. But in February 2022, the ED filed a money laundering case against him. He was accused of receiving money from the banned PFI.

On December 23, 2022, the Allahabad High Court had granted bail to Siddique Kappan in the money laundering case. The sureties required for the release of Kappan on bail could be submitted in a court on Wednesday. So, he got out of jail on Thursday.
