Murder for Rs. 80; Accused Sentenced to life Imprisonment

Angul: A man convicted of murder committed for a mere Rs 80 was sentenced to life imprisonment on Wednesday by a Court of Angul District.

The accused was identified as Panchanan Pradhan, a neighbour of the victim Ranjan Pradhan. They both hail from Ogi village of Jharpada police station in Angul district.

Reportedly, Panchanan Pradhan took a loan of 80 rupees from Rajan Pradhan in 2016. On November 15th, 2016, Rajan asked Panchanan to return back the money.

Panchanan got angry and there was an argument and shouting between them. In a fit of rage, Panchanan shot Rajan in front of his house around 7 pm. Rajan died on the spot. After shooting, Panchanan escaped from the spot.

Rajan’s mother Radha Pradhan filed a written complaint at Jharpada police station. The police registered a case and investigated the incident and arrested the accused Panchanan Pradhan and took him to court.

In this case, Angul Additional District Magistrate Ranjita Jyotshi has sentenced accused Panchanan Pradhan to life imprisonment and a fine of 10 thousand rupees based on the statements of 13 witnesses and all the documents. In default of payment of the fine, he was ordered to undergo imprisonment for one more year. Additional Public Prosecutor Tapas Ranjan Mishra and Biswajit Baral were handling the case on behalf of the government.
