Pakistan’s New Army Chief Headed the ISI When Pulwama Attack Occurred

Lt Gen Syed Asim Munir is all set to become Pakistan’s 17th army chief. Pakistan’s Army Chief always has a tight hold on Pakistan’s power politics. India will surely have a close watch on the ascension of Lt Gen Munir to the position to be vacated by Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa. Let us know more about this new Army chief of Pakistan.

* In October 2018, Lt Gen Syed Asim Munir became the chief of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), the infamous intelligence agency of Pakistan. He remained in the post for just eight months.

*During his ISI tenure the Pulwama attack that killed 40 CRPF personnel in February 2019 took place.

* Lt Gen Syed Asim Munir started his military career in 1986.

*He is a graduate from the 17th course of the Officers Training School in Mangla. He was first commissioned into the 23rd Battalion of the Frontier Force Regiment. *He was promoted to the rank of a three-star general in September 2018.

*Lt. Gen. Munir’s four-year tenure as Lt Gen ends on November 27.

*At present, he is posted as Quarter Master General at GHQ in Rawalpindi. He looks after supplies for all military units.

*From 2017, he served as Military Intelligence director general for 21 months.

*He is a holder of the Sword of Honour and was awarded Hilal-i-Imtiaz in March 2018.
