Supreme Court Seeks Status Report on Steps to Curb Ethnic Violence in Manipur

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday expressed concern over the law and order situation in Manipur. The apex court also sought a detailed status report from the Manipur government on the measures taken to curb ethnic violence in the state.

A Supreme Court bench, headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, asked the Manipur government to submit the report by July 10, the next day of the hearing. The Supreme Court court was hearing petitions related to Manipur violence. These petitions include a plea from an NGO seeking Army protection for the minority Kuki tribals and action against groups allegedly attacking them.

The Supreme Court asked the Manipur government to provide details of the steps taken towards building rehabilitation camps for homeless and violence-affected people, deployment of forces, and the law and order situation in Manipur.

The situation is improving in Manipur but slowly, said Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to the court. Mehta appeared for the Centre and Manipur government. He informed that apart from the Manipur police, Manipur rifles, companies of CAPF, 114 columns of Army, and Manipur Commandos were deployed in the state.
