The new flag of the Navy is unveiled

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday unveiled the new Ensign of the Navy on the occasion of the launch of the country’s first indigenously developed aircraft carrier from the Kochi Shipyard in Kerala. At the top of the new flag is the national flag of India and the national emblem within a blue octagonal shape next to it.

This octagonal design is inspired by the seal of Chhatrapati Shivaji. Prime Minister said that India has removed its burden of slavery by accepting new ensigns.

In 1934, the Navy has renamed the Royal Indian Navy (RIN). After independence, with the partition of the country, the Navy was divided into the Royal Indian Navy and the Royal Pakistan Navy. After India became a republic on 26 January 1950, the word ‘Royal’ was dropped and the Navy became known simply as the Indian Navy. Since then, the ensign of the Navy has had a white flag with red horizontal and vertical stripes. Between these two strips (the Cross of St. George) was the national symbol of India. After India became independent in 1947, the Union Jack at the top of the flag was removed and replaced with a triangle. The Cross of St George, a symbol of the colonial era, has been removed from the new naval flag unveiled on Friday.
