60 days leave for female employees on death of newborn

New Delhi: Women employees working under the central government will get 60 days of special maternity leave if their newborn dies during childbirth. In this regard, a directive has been issued by the Karmic and Training Department on Friday. Such a decision has been taken keeping in mind the grief of the mother who is stillborn or the child dies after birth.

Several applications have been received by the department seeking clarifications on leave/maternity leave in case of stillbirth or death of a newborn. In this regard, the department has discussed this with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It said that if a female employee has already taken maternity leave and continues to do so, the death of a child after birth or stillbirth will be considered given the rules within the leave availability of the concerned employee. Therefore, a medical certificate is not required. It has been clarified by the Ministry of Karma that in case of the death of a stillborn child or taking into account the day of stillbirth, 60 days of leave will be sanctioned.
