“The Serpent” Who was also Serial “Bikini Killer”

At the ripe age of 78, the convicted serial killer Charles Sobhraj is getting out of Nepalese jail on Thursday. He is so popular that last year the BBC and Netflix produced a series named ‘The Serpent’ on his life story. Sobhraj has strong Indian connections.

*Although a French national, born from the union of an Indian father and a Vietnamese mother. He was a conman, a seducer, a robber, and a murderer, all rolled into one.

*He always befriended his victims through his charm before drugging, robbing and murdering them. Some of his victims were found in bikinis, and he got the nickname “the Bikini Killer”.

*Sobhraj is adept at changing appearances. He was sentenced to 21 years imprisonment in India in jail on murder charges. But he managed to escape from jail in the mid-1980s and was again nabbed to remain in jail till 1997.

*Sobhraj returned to France after being released from an Indian jail.

*In 2003, he was arrested in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu and convicted of murdering an American backpacker and her Canadian friend.

*He is alleged to have murdered over 20 young western backpackers across Asia, usually by drugging their food or drink.

*He had drugged and killed six women in Thailand in the mid-1970s. Bodies of all these women were found in bikinis on Pattaya beach.

*He is called “the serpent” for his ability to disguise himself to escape from prisons.
