Debate Ensues as ASI Restarts Sand Removal from Konark Sun Temple

Konark: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) resumed the process of removing sand from the Jagamohan of the Konark Sun Temple today. The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Odisha’s Puri district.

The sand filling was done by the British administration in 1903 to provide structural support to the temple. However, there are concerns that the sand is now putting pressure on the temple and could cause it to collapse.

The ASI has partnered with BDR Construction Private Limited to carry out the sand removal work. The project is expected to take three years to complete.

Meanwhile, the head of the advisory committee for the project, Dr Narayan Chandra Pal, has raised concerns about the safety of the temple. He has said that the sand removal work should not be carried out without prior consultation with the committee and without finalizing the technical aspects of the procedure.

Dr Pal has also questioned the decision to proceed with the sand removal work, given the risks involved. He has said that it is important to ensure the safety of the temple while preserving its architectural legacy.

The ASI has said that it will take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of the temple during the sand removal work. The project will be closely monitored by experts.

The sand removal work is a complex and challenging project. However, it is important to ensure the safety of the Konark Sun Temple for future generations.
