Newlywed Woman Allegedly Dies by Suicide Due to Dowry Harassment in Odisha’s Balasore

Balasore: A woman in Odisha’s Balasore district reportedly died by suicide on Tuesday, barely two months after her marriage, due to alleged dowry harassment.

The deceased, identified as Laxmipriya Sethi from Serpur village under Khaira police limits, was married to Jagannath Das of Tentalagadia village on July 14. According to reports, Laxmipriya’s family had provided some dowry at the time of the wedding.

However, shortly after the marriage, Laxmipriya informed her parents that her in-laws were pressuring her for additional dowry, including gold jewellery and cash. Her family, unable to fulfil these demands due to financial difficulties, faced increasing pressure.

On Tuesday morning, Jagannath informed Laxmipriya’s parents that she had taken her own life by hanging herself in her room. Upon receiving the information, Khaira police arrived at the scene, sent the body for post-mortem and detained Jagannath and his mother, Jayanti Das, for questioning.

Laxmipriya’s parents have accused her in-laws of torturing and ultimately killing her over dowry demands.

The Inspector-in-Charge of Khaira police station Mousumi Mohanty stated that a thorough investigation is underway, and appropriate action will be taken against the suspects.
