NGT Orders Puri Municipality to Clear Baliapanda Dumping Yard by 2025 End

Puri: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered Puri Municipality to remove the Baliapanda dumping yard by December 31, 2025. The 50-foot-tall dumping yard covers eight acres of land and has been causing health hazards to the local residents.

The NGT has directed the municipality to shift the waste material from the area after having proper treatment. The tribunal has also ordered to keep the entire dumping yard area under CCTV surveillance and not to allow anybody to enter the area.

The NGT has given the order while hearing a petition filed by lawyer Chinmay Dash. Dash had filed the petition a few months back after considering the ordeal of the local people residing near the dumping yard.

The residents of the Baliapanda area in Puri have been expressing their resentment over the health hazards they are facing due to the dumping yard. The stinking smell of the decomposing waste material in the dumping yard is unbearable for the local residents. The smoke emitting from the dumping yard whenever there is a fire also causes inconvenience to residents.

The NGT’s order is a welcome step and will hopefully help to improve the living conditions of the local residents.
