Manipur Naked Parade Case: House of Main Accused Burnt Down

Kangpokpi: The house of the main accused, Huirem Herodas Meitei, was set on fire by protesters two days after a video depicting two women being paraded naked by a mob went viral. The incident occurred in Kangpokpi district following ethnic violence that erupted on May 3.

The video, which surfaced after an internet ban was lifted, triggered nationwide outrage and prompted the Manipur Police to take suo moto cognisance of the matter. A case of abduction, gangrape, and murder against unidentified men has been registered at Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district. Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, as reported by official sources.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh assured a thorough investigation and emphasized that strict action, including possible capital punishment, will be taken.

The violence in Manipur has been fueled by tensions between the Meitei community, constituting 53% of the state’s population residing in the Imphal Valley, and the tribal groups, including Nagas and Kukis, accounting for 40% and living mostly in the hill districts. The unrest began when a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organized to protest the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

As the situation remains sensitive, authorities are working to restore peace and justice in the region.
